Diversity in The Classroom

Diversity within the classroom can benefit learning, especially when teaching history. Students can speak about their lived experiences, culture, and beliefs. Students need to be able to share their stances within the classroom setting to help broaden perspectives and create a deeper understanding. However, diversity can also bring challenges. Some students may have very different learning abilities, backgrounds, or perspectives from me, so I need to be intentional about meeting each student where they are. They may also experience the world in ways that I have not, which could make it harder for me to fully understand their challenges without actively listening and creating opportunities for them to share. My students may be different from me in areas such as race, socioeconomic background, and even learning style. To bridge that gap, I will strive to build relationships, foster open dialogue, and create an inclusive environment where students feel comfortable expressing their experiences. By valuing their voices, I can learn what their lives are like and use that knowledge to shape meaningful lessons.
